STATE CARDS
STATE ABBREVIATIONS
STATE CAPITALS
STATE FLAGS
You can use these cards in many different ways.

You can create flashcards with the state names on one side and
either the abbreviations, capitals, OR the flags on the other.

You can create a matching game with each set.
Print a copy of the state names and a copy of the other files.
You can then match the state names to either the flags, abbreviations, OR
capitals.
Once you have that down, trying matching the abbreviations to the capitals
OR flags.

Use these as a supplement to your study of the 50 states.
You can also use them as an educational game whenever you have game time,
even if you are not working with the 50 states during school time.

Teaching the 50 States

Learning important information about each of the 50 states, I believe, is a
crucial part of homeschooling.  I am still amazed, and I say this with a very
humble attitude, that I can go through elementary school, high school, and
graduate college with an Elementary Education degree and not know
information on the 50 states.  This is something that is very important to me.

I want my children to be able to recognize the flags of each of the states.  Or
at least be able to recognize that the flag is a state flag.  Each flag has such
wonderful representation and really can tell the story of the plight of each
state.  What a wonderful way to teach the 50 states to our children.

The capitals of each state are also crucial information for our children to
know.  Simply having a basic understanding of the location of a city being
discussed in casual conversation, or hearing the name of a city on the news
will make for a well-educated child.  Take each state and locate it on a map.
Find the capital city.  Usually when the newscaster talks about a city in a
different state, the capital is always used as a reference point.  Finding out
where a city is in a different state is commonly referenced in conversation to
the capital of that state.

Abbreviations.  Need I say more than letter writing skills?  My husband is a
mailman, so I understand the importance of knowing each of the postal
abbreviations.  This will make life so much easier, not only for our children,
but for the many mail clerks and carriers around!  :O)

Last, but not least, is the state names.  We, as American citizens, should be
able to name our 50 states.  Even if you can't do that in alphabetical order,
the names of the states are important.  They are a part of who we are as a
country.  As you are learning the names of the states, find a map and locate
them as well.  When you and your children are proficient, find a great blank
map and label each state.  Continue until you get them all correct.

What a wonderful batch of knowledge we will be passing on to our children
when we teach them the importance of the 50 states.
